The masterbatch dosage affects color consistency, opacity, processing performance, and production cost. However, there is no single addition ratio suitable for every plastic product. The correct dosage should be determined according to the material, application, and required appearance.
What Affects the Masterbatch Dosage?
Color depth: Dark or highly saturated colors may require a different dosage than light or transparent shades.
Product thickness: A thin film or thin-walled part may need a higher pigment concentration to achieve the same visual effect as a thicker product.
Base resin: PP, PE, ABS, PS, PET, and engineering plastics have different properties. The carrier resin of the masterbatch should also be suitable for the selected material and processing conditions.
Opacity requirements: Products that must cover the natural color of the resin or recycled material may require stronger pigmentation or a higher addition ratio.
Processing method: Injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and film production can produce different color results, even when the same masterbatch is used.
Start with the Recommended Ratio
A masterbatch supplier will normally provide a suggested starting ratio, such as 1%, 2%, or 4%. This is a reference rather than a universal guarantee. Manufacturers should conduct a production trial using the actual resin, equipment, temperature, product thickness, and recycled-material percentage.
Adding too little masterbatch may cause weak or uneven color. Adding more than necessary can increase costs and may affect processing or product properties.
For a more accurate recommendation, provide your supplier with the base resin, processing method, color reference, finished-product application, estimated quantity, and any special performance or compliance requirements.
